The ten commandments
Commandment 1: You shall have no other gods before me
The first commandment is simple: do not worship other gods before The God. This means we shouldn’t question God’s existence, ad we shouldn’t only come to God when we need help.
Commandment 2: You shall make no idols
This seems simple and easy to follow: who bows down to golden statues anyway? That is what many people think, when this isn’t all to this command. An idol can be anything from it’s literal definition; a carved figure or shape that people religiously bow down to, or it can be something you prioritize in your life above God; like sports or school. This command can be put into much simpler terms; make God the most important thing in your life.
Commandment 3: You shall not take the name of God in vain
This commandment basically says to keep God’s name holy; never joke about it, and never use it to curse. I know it can be hard- what else do you do when you jam your toe in the door, but it is God’s word and therefore can be hard to follow- but it's what we should be doing.
Commandment 4: Keep the sabbath day holy
This commandment can be hard to understand; but it basically means that on the sabbath (sunday for christian) families should take time off of work to worship god in remembrance on the seventh day of creation when he rested.
Commandment 5: Honor your father and your mother above yourself
This one is very hard for teenagers and just people with harsh parents in general. This means that God put your mother and father in your life for a reason; and no matter what you should be honoring them above yourself. This also applies to general authority in your life; such as teachers, bosses, officials, etc.
Commandment 6: You shall not murder
This commandment is very easy to follow; simply don’t kill anyone- that’s easy…right? Actually it may not be at times. Sometimes people get enraged at people; whether for the way they treat them, the way they act, and sometimes even the things they have. But remember that whatever you do; murder is intolerable.
Commandment 7: You shall not commit adultery
Adultery is a terrible sin; it is the unfaithfulness to one’s spouse. I have seen the effects of this horrible action and it can absolutely devastating. It can destroy a family and the life of others. I have first-hand seen this horrible thing go on, and I have seen in destroy someone inside out. It may be tempting, but you should NEVER commit adultery. Matthew 5:27-28 says: “You have heard that it was said, “Do not commit adultery. ‘ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart”.
Commandment 8: You shall not steal
Stealing is the taking of an object from its owner, and the bible begs people not to do it. Stealing can not only scar your image, but can cause terrible guilt and even depression. Stealing can be anything from brutally and bloodily mugging someone, to innocently taking an article found on the floor. Stealing can be extremely tempting, but you should not do it.
Commandment 9: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
This commandment is very tempting; it is lying. Lying can not only harm others around you, but it can also scar your reputation and how people see you. Lying can be as simple as leaving out some details to your story, or as terrible as framing an innocent person for the crimes you have commited. Lying can destroy other people around you; so do not do it.
Commandment 10: You shall not covet your neighbor's things
This commandment tells us not to be jealous of the things others have. God has given you your life and your things so that you can be successful, everyone needs different things. Remember that if God wants you to have it, he’ll give it to you.
